In Review: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close came out in December of 2011 and was directed by Stephen Daldry.

The movie was odd to me, at first. You have this incredibly smart boy who has countless phobias, and instead of focusing on the restoration after his dad dies, we follow Oskar Schell on some sort of treasure hunt.

Then I got it; the imagery, the rhythm, and the character personalities began to fit.

A huge problem I have when watching movies is constantly thinking throughout “how would I have done this?” And when things don’t happen that way it feels off beat to me, but once I extract myself from it and look at the movie objectively, most times I really enjoy it.

The big “problem” that threw me off was Oskar’s character. This smart, emotionally unstable kid seemed like he would’ve have been better suited for a sitcom. But, since seeing the whole movie through his character fit really well into the story.

Extremely Loud is a movie about restoration and resolve and uses high concept imagery to portray that. Overall, I’d say it’s a must-see.

EA Indie Bundle Oxymoron?

If you are any sort of gamer, then unless you have been living under a rock you probably know somewhat about the EA Indie Bundle that is now on Steam. Unfortunately, this bundle has gotten a lot of bad press and I can’t help but think that’s because of the bias a lot of gamers have against EA.

Now, I recognize EA isn’t the smartest, nicest company. BUT! I think in regards to this bundle, it’s the best move EA has made yet.

Part of the reason I think people are calling this out is due to the fact that the term “indie bundle” means something totally different these days. What with the Humble Indie Bundle, Indie Royale, and other similar bundles — those all bring in an assortment of indie made games and often contribute a large amount of the money towards a charity.

Steam has its own sort of bundles. For instance, around the holiday season they had a bunch of deals on bundles for games published by Warner Bros., Bethesda, Valve, etc. These bundles included a number of games all for a discounted price. The EA Indie Bundle is just like that, only it contains indie made games.

Yes, the games are published by EA, but Super Meat Boy and Fez were both published by Microsoft. Does that make them not indie? I saw the best quote on Twitter today about this very subject:

I mean, would you be pissed if Microsoft made an XBLA Indie Bundle with Braid, Fez, Castle Crashers, Toy Soldiers & Limbo? All MS published. - by Ryan Langley

I really don’t get the issue here.Yes, EA put out an indie bundle because THAT’S WHAT IT IS! All the games in that bundle are indie developed, they’re just published by EA. And you have to give props to EA for at least doing this right. For one, the bundle is not on Origin, it’s one Steam. Two, as far as I know they haven’t made a big deal about it. Finally, it’s on Steam.

Also surrounding this whole issue, the issue of Notch tweeting his rather bold statements about the bundle.

EA releases an “indie bundle”? That’s not how that works, EA. Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards. - Reference
I got into trouble on the interwebs again! The games in the bundle are good, I’m not questioning them. I’m questioning EA. - Reference
Twitter quotes are NOT NEWS. You’re better than that, and you make me feel dirty. - Reference

Pretty strong statements and are they correct? I would assert, not entirely. I still fail to see the problem with EA releasing an indie bundle and would love to hear how releasing an indie bundle really works according to Notch.

I must say, I am disgusted with both Notch and the press that have released his statements as news. It’s just sensationalism, not news. However, Notch needs to realize his name is popular around the gaming world and needs to recognize what he says will be taken out of context and/or twisted to make eye-grabbing headlines.

Notch also said that he should’ve been asked to clarify his point but I don’t think you really need to clarify EA is a “bunch of cynical bastards”. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

In closing, I want to stay stop crying. I mean, EA may not do everything right but that’s the gaming world for you. They did this right and you should shutup and buy the games. They are REALLY good and REALLY cheap.
